Gout & Uric Acid Testing

Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when high levels of uric acid in the blood lead to the formation of sharp crystals in and around joints. This can cause sudden attacks of joint pain, swelling, redness, and stiffness.

Uric acid forms when the body breaks down substances called purines, which occur naturally in the body and are also found in certain foods.

Managing gout often involves lifestyle changes, such as diet and reducing alcohol intake, and in some cases medication prescribed by your doctor to help control uric acid levels.

Uric Acid Testing

At Mercury Bay Pharmacy, we can perform a simple uric acid screening test using a small blood sample from your fingertip.

  • The test takes around 10 minutes

  • Results may help you understand your uric acid level

  • The pharmacist can explain the result and provide general advice about gout and uric acid management

Depending on the result, the pharmacist may suggest lifestyle measures or recommend that you follow up with your doctor for further assessment.

Medicines for Gout
Some people with gout may be prescribed medicines to help manage their condition.

One commonly prescribed medicine is allopurinol, which works by reducing the amount of uric acid produced by the body. This can help lower uric acid levels and reduce the risk of future gout attacks.

Allopurinol requires a prescription from a doctor or authorised prescriber.
If your uric acid levels are elevated or you experience recurrent gout attacks, the pharmacist may recommend that you discuss treatment options with your doctor.
