Emergency Contraceptive Pill (Morning After Pill)
The Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP), also known as the morning after pill, may be available from the pharmacist at Mercury Bay Pharmacy without a prescription if you may be at risk of pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse within the previous 72 hours.
If you are unsure whether emergency contraception is appropriate for you, please visit the pharmacy and speak with the pharmacist for advice.
The ECP may be supplied following a private consultation with the pharmacist if it is clinically appropriate. During the consultation the pharmacist will:
Review your relevant medical history
Ask questions about timing and circumstances
Assess factors that may affect effectiveness, including body weight or body mass index (BMI)
Provide advice on how to take the medication
Body weight or BMI may affect the effectiveness of some emergency contraceptive medicines.
Please note:
The ECP must be supplied directly to the person requiring the medication, as a pharmacist consultation is required.
There is no minimum legal age for supply, however the pharmacist must be satisfied that the person can give informed consent and understand the advice provided.
No appointment is required — you can speak directly with the pharmacist.
A consultation fee and medication charge may apply.
If you have questions about emergency contraception, please visit Mercury Bay Pharmacy and speak with one of our pharmacists.
