Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) & Minor Eye Infections
The pharmacists at Mercury Bay Pharmacy can assess symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and minor eyelid infections such as styes.
Common symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis may include:
Redness of the eye
Irritation or discomfort
Sticky or watery discharge
Eyes that may be crusty, particularly in the morning
Following a consultation, the pharmacist may supply chloramphenicol eye drops or ointment if it is considered appropriate for your symptoms.
Chloramphenicol may be supplied by a pharmacist for adults and children aged 3 months and over, after an assessment.
Please note:
If you wear contact lenses and develop conjunctivitis while wearing them, you should see your doctor or optometrist. Chloramphenicol cannot be supplied in this situation because a more serious eye condition may need to be ruled out.
Some eye infections require medical assessment or referral.
No appointment is required — simply speak with the pharmacist.
A consultation fee and medication cost may apply.
If you are experiencing symptoms of conjunctivitis or an eye infection, visit Mercury Bay Pharmacy and speak with one of our pharmacists.
